About The Author

In September 1992, my life changed forever. My son was born. Raising a child with a learning difference is not the path we parents expect to take. Nothing can break your heart or turn your stomach more than watching your child struggle and trying to figure out ways to help that are supportive and productive to their overall growth.

Over the past 20 years, I have learned that when we embrace our challenges, we learn something deep and important about ourselves. What we think is a challenge becomes an opportunity to enlighten our lives in ways we never imagined. I was rewarded with so many joytful moments when I embraced my son’s challenges and dedicated myself to finding a new, constructive path. I’ve spent more than two decades educating myself on what the words “learning difference” really mean, the countless challenges presented to those children and families labeled with a “learning difference,” and how these children can grow up and make a joyful and successful life for themselves.

In August 2011, my son was accepted into his dream college, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. I thought he was ready. I thought I could relax for the first time in 18 years. I was wrong. Eight weeks into his freshman year, he was failing every class. I knew executive function might pose a challenge for my son, but I had no idea of the dramatic impact it would have as he transitioned into college. So I embarked on a journey to understand executive function, how it develops (or does not), the reasons for the problems around this issue (which appear to be proliferating nationwide), along with the accompanying guilt and confusion that parents, like myself, often feel.

I was determined to intimately understand executive function and create a way to help support it. I tackled this problem as a parent, not as a teacher or psychologist, which gave me a unique perspective on how to successfully navigate this challenge.

Throughout my career, I have started and run three different companies. Today I am the Founder/CEO of CoPilot Systems. I interweave my years of business experience with my life’s passion of helping kids reach their potential. I work with students nationwide and have developed a technology tool that supports students with weak executive function. It’s my goal that all high school and college students experience school with a GPA that matches their intelligence and motivation and that leads them to thrive and achieve their dreams.
